    Trauma

Most people will experience trauma in their lifetime. It may be an event such as a car accident or sexual assault; a natural disaster like wild-fire, flood, or devastating storms; or severe adverse childhood experiences like sexual or physical abuse, neglect, the sudden separation from loved ones, a violent criminal act, or exposure to the violence of war.

Some people do not experience traumatic reactions to such events. But many people do. The lasting effects of trauma can cause a person to live with inexplicable symptoms, deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or the sudden intrusion of posttraumatic stress like nightmares or flashbacks long after the situation has passed.

In these circumstances, the support, guidance, and assistance of a therapist is fundamental to healing from trauma.
